At the same moment
that Buggiano’s cultural association was formed
and growing, the ancient Palazzo Pretorio in the
medieval square of the village was undergoing restoration.
When it was completed, in 1975, the Palazzo was
opened to the public, and members of the association
undertook to voluntarily oversee the public visits.
The year 1979 was a particularly important moment
for Buggiano and its new public face. Enrico
Coturri, founding father of the Association
and its resident from 1973 until his death in 1999,
created and conducted an annual cycle of small conferences.
With the participation of academics and other experts
in the area, each conference would be devoted to
a meticulous study of various aspects of
the history of Buggiano and the surrounding
area of the Valdinievole. The meetings are now a
yearly event in the village, attended by history
buffs from all over the area. Records of the event
have been published as well.
Giornata di Studio - or Study Day
- as it is called, is always held in the main grand
room of the Palazzo Pretorio, in collaboration with
the Buggiano Public Library, and more recently,
with the backing of the municipality as well. In
the year 2000, an interdisciplinary academic committee,
under the guidance of Professor Giovanni Cherubini,
was formed to prepare annual sequential themes for
each Study Day. A new ruling in 2002 guarantees
the continuation of Study Day as well as the participation
of qualified cultural and historical experts. The
event takes place in early June each year. |
